In the course of many years Russia has been leading a lengthy war with Turkey for the right of access to the Black Sea. In 1787 after the victory in Crimea, having defeated the enemy behind the Bug River the duke Potemkin laid siege to Ochakov tower. The siege delayed, for the victory a modern navy was needed the power of which could exceed the Turkish one. One Kherson dockyard was unable of managing with a strategic mission of a quickened equipage of the fleet.
At that time Potemkin found its place for the new shipyard near the mouth of Ingul River. A project of creating here of a colossal admiralty with workshops, factories, and plants – a cradle of the future of the Russian Black Sea Fleet appeared at once. The city had got its own profession before it was created. The town emerged quickly around the shipyard. At first it was nameless. Its name was Nikolyaev. The city got it in 1789 on the Day of St. Nicholas, the patron of seamen.
As it happens, the main citizens of the city from its foundation have been men. The majority of them were bachelors. They came to the city not voluntarily, but at the order of Potemkin. To hold half-dependent builders of the city and the shipyard duke Potemkin decided to give men the opportunity of creating their families and taking roots in Nikolyaev. As it was impossible to find unmarried women in the city, the duke gave an order to take many women and girls not only from villages and cities nearby, but from the whole South of Russia. The most beautiful and youngest single ukrainian women were chosen as Nikolayev brides. That is the reason why in Nikolayev live the most beautiful brides. It’s impossible to change anything in one’s genes. Since the time of the ‘St. Nicholas’ on the three city’s shipyards there have been more than two thousands ships built. Among them there are frigatebirds, battleships, torpedo boats, submarines etc. Nikolayev is one of the two world’s cities where heavyweight air capable ships have been built.
Today Nikolyaev is a big railway junction. Here three sea and river ports are situated and one of the biggest international airports on the South of Ukraine. An architecture of the city is reviving, ancient buildings in the city downtown are renovated, new ones appear, cathedrals and churches are restored, trade and sports complexes grow, enterprises of consumer services appear. Nikolayev is a very beautiful city, washed on three sides with waters of Ingul and Southern Bug. One of the features of the sunny Nikolayev is its abundance of green. A dazzling white of acacias as well as bright bunches of lilacs, a festive blossom of chestnuts, a splendid green of maples, sycamores, giant poplars, a splendid blossom of fruit gardens fit the city. Here are many parks, squares, boulevards, the ancient zoo in Ukraine are Nikolayev citizens’ dignity. The city which entered the third century of its history is full of hopes and plans for future.
